Hawaii is now reopen for tourism – All the details you need to know!

The travel itch is so real right now. With most of us being in lockdown for months in end, there is an urge to travel albeit to safe destinations. While local roadtrips or state-cations are still the most popular kind of trip right now, I am so ready for a real tropical trip!

Hawaii has officially reopened for Tourism on Oct 15th!

Hawaii is certainly the easiest domestic tropical island destination to get to from California or from anywhere in the west coast and I have been patiently waiting for when the beautiful islands would open up to tourists, without requiring a 14 day quarantine. The state of Hawaii recently reopened on starting October 15th with a pre travel testing option. Travelers who test negative for coronavirus no more than 72 hours before arriving in Hawaii will be able to avoid the state’s mandatory quarantine. Besides the negative COVID-19 test, travelers also need to fill a travel form, answer some health screening questions, and are subject to temperature check at the airports. I am honestly glad that the rules to enter are this strict so that hopefully Hawaii can keep the islands and their residents safe from COVID-19. Here is a quick infographic with all the details :

Important details on the Pre Approval Testing :

1) You have to first register through the mandatory Hawaii Safe Travels online program. (18 and older)

2) Every traveler must take an an approved COVID-19 test through Hawaii’s trusted testing and travel partners within 72 hours of departure and have negative results from the test.

Tip : Many airlines including United, Hawaiian, Alaska and American, have developed a testing system available to travelers flying to Hawaii from certain hub airports, or via an at-home kit. Check with your airline for options.

3) Complete the health questionnaire on your Safe Travels account, 24 hours before departure.
4)  Social distancing and mask requirements during travel is required.
5) All incoming travelers must pass thermal temperature checks and facial-imaging technology upon arrival.
6) Produce the Safe Travels QR code to local officials upon arrival in Hawaii.

Other details to know :

It is only important to note that not all the islands have the same rules once you land. There are also rules on inter island travel. Here are some important details :

  • Big Island : Travelers who test negative 72 hour prior to travel to the Big Island also have to take a second, free rapid antigen test at the airport upon arrival. A negative result from this would allow the traveler to bypass mandatory self-isolation.
  • Maui, Kauai : second voluntary test is offered 3 days after arrival to the island.
  • Is inter island travel allowed? Travelers going to Oahu from another Hawaiian Island do not have a 14-day quarantine or current testing requirement. However, those traveling to Kauai, Hawaii (Big Island), Maui, Lanai and Molokai from another Hawaiian island are subject to a 14-day quarantine.

What do you think of this news? Are you ready to book your trip to paradise? Without further adieu – onto the fun parts! Which Hawaiian island would you choose…

Which Hawaiian island is for you?

With the 4 main islands to choose from – Hawaii really has something to offer for every single traveller. Whether you are looking for adventure, leisure, wellness, culinary experiences, or more – choosing the right Hawaiian island/s is the first step in planning your tropical getaway. Having been to Hawaii multiple times I can tell you each island has its own unique vibe! Every island is diverse and beautiful in its own way. If you need any inspo for now or for the future here are my travel guides from the 4 main islands of Hawaii + why I love each one of them.

If the no 1 priority in your vacay is beautiful beaches – I would pick Maui among all the Hawaiian islands. Handsdown my fave Hawaiian island is Maui! It holds a special place in my heart as we went here on our honeymoon 8 years ago. We went back recently and fell in love with the island all over again.

Maui is also the perfect island getaway if you are looking for a luxurious romantic escape – it has tons of incredible resorts to choose from. Even though Maui is popular for honeymooners, it is also a greta island for families with kids.

If you love diversity and variety in an island – the Big Island is unbeatable! Infact, the island is known to have 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones – and without a doubt it is the most diverse destination I have been to in my life. The Big island of Hawai’i has it all from – unique beaches (black sand, white sand and green sand too!), active volcanoes, mountains, jungles, grasslands and even snow capped mountains (yes you read that right!). Our entire trip here was one epic adventure and I am dying to go back!

If you love nature, epic hikes along with an authentic Hawaiian island experience – the garden isle of Kauai is for you! Kauai’s landscapes like the majestic Napali Coast are some of the most breathtaking and beautiful natural landscapesI have seen in my life. To me, Kauai felt the most “authentic” in terms of having a local island feel compared to the other 3 islands.
