There are some places in the world that almost don’t feel real – the kind of places you spend years seeing in photos, wondering if they could possibly live up to the hype. For me, Raja Ampat was one of those places. And after staying at Papua Paradise Eco Resort, I can honestly say it exceeded every expectation I had.

My husband and I recently a few days here, and it ended up being one of the most memorable stays we’ve ever had. Tucked away on the untouched island of Birie in the heart of Raja Ampat, Papua Paradise feels wonderfully remote in the best possible way, surrounded by turquoise water, lush jungle, thriving coral reefs, and some of the most incredible marine life we’ve ever seen.

If you’re looking for where to stay in Raja Ampat and want something deeply connected to nature while still feeling comfortable, peaceful, and immersive, this resort is truly special.

Papua Paradise somehow manages to feel adventurous and luxurious at the same time. The resort grounds felt like a true barefoot luxury retreat tucked deep within nature. Everything had a rustic-chic charm like the wooden walkways stretching over turquoise water, lush jungle surrounding the property, and traditional overwater bungalows that blend seamlessly into the environment.

Everywhere you go, you hear the sounds of birds, gentle waves, and the jungle all around you, creating such a peaceful and immersive atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you instantly slow down, disconnect, and fully settle into island life.

Getting to Raja Ampat takes a little effort, but that’s also part of what keeps it feeling so untouched and magical. Most international travelers will first fly into Jakarta or Bali before taking a domestic flight to Sorong, which is the main gateway to Raja Ampat. From Sorong, Papua Paradise organizes seamless transfers directly to the resort, which made the entire process incredibly stress-free for us. Once we arrived in Sorong, the resort staff handled everything from there. The transfer was a 1.5 hour speedboat journey. By the time we arrived at the resort dock and saw the overwater bungalows stretching across the beautiful lagoon, we already knew this place was going to be special.

Papua Paradise offers three bungalow categories – Deluxe, Superior, and Premier, all built in traditional Papuan style over the water and designed to feel completely immersed in the surrounding nature. Whether you’re looking for something simple and cozy or more spacious and elevated, each category gives you stunning views for days and peaceful atmosphere the resort is known for.

We stayed in one of the Premier Bungalows, and it was absolutely stunning. The bungalow was incredibly spacious, beautifully designed with traditional materials and local architecture, yet still felt very comfortable and thoughtfully designed.

The Premier bungalows have a large bedroom, living area, spacious bathroom and the large outdoor deck. Our favorite part was easily the massive deck overlooking the ocean. We spent so much time there – drinking coffee in the mornings, watching the sunset in the evenings, and simply taking in the unreal views surrounding us. Waking up each morning to the sounds of birds and waves gently moving beneath the bungalow was such a peaceful experience. It felt like a complete disconnect from the outside world in the best possible way.

One thing I especially loved about Papua Paradise is how connected the rooms feel to nature. There’s no flashy over-the-top luxury here, instead, it’s all about simplicity, serenity, and immersion in the environment around you. And somehow, that makes it feel even more luxurious. Here are some photos from our bungalow :

The food at Papua Paradise was another highlight of our stay. Meals are served buffet-style at the beautiful open-air Seaview Restaurant overlooking the house reef, and every meal felt fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. We especially loved the traditional Indonesian dishes – so many comforting curries, grilled seafood, fresh vegetables, sambals, and rice dishes packed with flavor.

You can tell the resort really emphasizes fresh ingredients and local sourcing. Many of the fruits and vegetables come from nearby villages and the resort’s own gardens, which made everything taste incredibly fresh. One of my favorite memories was sitting at dinner while watching baby reef sharks swim through the water below the restaurant as the sun set over Raja Ampat.

The spa at Papua Paradise deserves its own section because it ended up being one of our favorite experiences at the resort. We booked a couples massage during our stay, and it was honestly one of the most relaxing spa experiences we’ve ever had. The spa is surrounded entirely by nature, so throughout the treatment all you hear are birds, waves, and the sounds of the jungle around you.

Ayu was absolutely wonderful and made the entire experience feel so calming from beginning to end. After long days spent snorkeling and exploring Raja Ampat, it was the perfect way to unwind. Papua Paradise is also known for having one of the few luxury spas in Raja Ampat, designed specifically as a place for healing, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

One of the things we loved most about Papua Paradise was how many incredible activities and excursions were available. We planned something with the dive center almost every day, and there was never a shortage of unforgettable experiences. There are plenty of things to do whether you are a driver or just a snorkeler like us.

There are two house reefs here and they are stunning. Both os them are teeming with life – vibrant corals, massive schools of fish, some reef sharks, and endless marine biodiversity right at your doorstep.

There is also a small beach area for guests which was lovely.

The Fam Islands excursion was easily one of the highlights of our trip. The scenery throughout the entire excursion is breathtaking and feels almost too beautiful to be real. Piaynemo was nothing short of a dream!

This area of Raja Ampat is famous for its surreal limestone karsts, impossibly turquoise lagoons, and world-renowned snorkeling sites like Melissa’s Garden and Fam Slope — two of my favorite snorkeling sites in the world. The coral here was some of the healthiest and most vibrant we’ve ever seen. Huge coral gardens stretched endlessly beneath us, completely alive with reef fish in every direction. It genuinely felt like swimming through another planet.

One of the most unique experiences we did was the hornbill sunset excursion. Around sunset, we headed out by boat to watch the hornbills fly overhead as the sun began setting across the islands. Seeing these massive birds soaring across the glowing orange sky while surrounded by untouched jungle was such a magical experience. It’s moments like these that remind you how wild and untouched Raja Ampat still feels.

We also joined did a local snorkeling trips organized through the dive center to Wai and Pulao Dua. We loved seeing the colorful coral gardens, schools of fish and especially the turtles! The biodiversity in Raja Ampat is honestly unlike anywhere else we’ve snorkeled before.

We also stopped on this epic sandbar during the surface interval.

The Batanta waterfall excursion was another unforgettable experience and such a nice contrast to all the ocean adventures.

After a scenic boat ride, we hiked through lush jungle pathways and small streams before reaching the waterfall tucked deep within the rainforest. The entire experience felt peaceful, refreshing, and incredibly immersive.

Raja Ampat is obviously famous for its marine life, but excursions like this remind you how beautiful the landscapes above water are too.

One of the things I really appreciated about Papua Paradise is how thoughtfully sustainability is integrated into the entire resort experience. Their approach feels genuine and deeply connected to preserving the natural beauty of Raja Ampat while supporting the local community.

Between the incredible snorkeling, breathtaking scenery, peaceful overwater bungalows, and unforgettable excursions, our stay here truly felt magical from beginning to end. Whether we were exploring the vibrant reefs, visiting the Fam Islands, watching hornbills at sunset, or simply relaxing on our deck overlooking the ocean, every moment felt incredibly special.
What made the experience even more memorable was the warmth and hospitality of the staff. Everyone was so kind, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about making our stay unforgettable. We left Papua Paradise with so many incredible memories and already hope to return one day. If Raja Ampat has been on your bucket list, I genuinely cannot recommend Papua Paradise Eco Resort enough.
Thanks for stopping by!
