One of the very reasons we had the Yasawa Islands were on my list of must do islands in Fiji was the Majestic Sawa-I-Lau Blue Lagoon caves. Referred to as ‘the very heart of the Yasawas’ the caves are hidden beneath a dramatic volcanic peak, on Sawa-I-Lau island which is just south of Yasawa-I-Rara where our resort was situated. Yasawa Island Resort and Spa conducts biweekly excursions to these caves for their guests and if you are ever in this part of the world, consider it an absolute must do!
The boat ride to the caves itself was absolutely stunning! We saw countless shades of blue and green, and strings of deserted untouched islands as far as our eyes could see! When we arrived outside the caves also, it was so scenic and serene, with just a handful of local artisans and tourists, which made the experience all the more memorable.
The claim to fame for these magnificent caves was the movie “Blue Lagoon” starring Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins, that was shot here in the 80s! The caves have two magnificent caverns, the first is this azure blue lagoon nestled in the spectacular ancient limestone cave and the second secret cavern is accessible through an underwater tunnel. We swam in the first cave and also took a small jump into the lagoon, which was so fun! For those of you who are more adventurous, the second cave will definitely be an unforgettable experience! Swimming in these tranquil waters was so magical, we could just stare at the the towering limestone walls in awe; it was simply SO incredible! This is an adventure that we will certainly cherish forever !
