One of the things I was most looking forward to during our trip to Thailand was spending time with elephants. After some research we decided to visit the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary in Phuket, which is an ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project. It first started in Chiang Mai and now they have a brand new location in Phuket and Pattaya (opening soon) as well. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is home to over thirty formerly mistreated elephants, who are now free to enjoy their lives in the peaceful sanctuary. The center also does not allow any riding as it can be be very harmful for the elephants long term.
Being born and raised in India, I have had several encounters with elephants (both tamed and wild!) so they hold a very special place in my heart. I love love these gentle giants! So reliving my memories in this ethical abode was incredibly amazing! We got to feed the elephants fruit, get into a mud spa with them and then finally also shower with them. All the elephants were so beautiful and friendly, but my fave was the little baby elephant, he stole my heart! This was seriously one of the most memorable experiences Anush and I have ever had in our lives.
